Extraordinary African Safaris
Herds of 300 elephants beneath ancient baobabs, and a dry-season river that pulls in wildlife from across the Maasai steppe — northern Tanzania's most underrated park.
Two giants define Tarangire: elephants and baobabs. The park holds one of Africa’s densest elephant populations — herds of two and three hundred are a regular dry-season sight — moving among baobab trees that have stood for over a thousand years.
The park’s engine is the Tarangire River. From June to October it is the only reliable water on this stretch of the Maasai steppe, drawing elephant, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, and the predators that follow them into a concentrated wildlife corridor along its banks.
Just two hours’ drive from Arusha (about 120 km), Tarangire is the natural first stop on a Northern Circuit safari — yet most itineraries give it a single rushed game drive. Stay a night or two and you get big-game viewing to rival anywhere, with a fraction of the vehicles.
River circuit (north): the classic game-drive country, busiest near the gate, spectacular in dry season. Silale Swamp (east): a permanent green magnet for elephants and big pythons. Kitibong & the south: remote, lightly visited woodland for full-day explorations. Bordering conservancies: night drives and walking safaris that aren’t permitted inside the park itself.
“We counted over 200 elephants at the river in a single afternoon. Our guide just switched off the engine and we listened.” — Guest review, Google
The river becomes the steppe's only water and wildlife funnels in spectacularly. This is Tarangire at full strength — elephant central.
Best game viewingHerds begin dispersing as pans fill, but elephants and resident game remain. Green light, baby animals, and quiet lodges.
Best shoulder seasonLush landscapes and superb birding with migratory species in residence. Wildlife is more spread out — pair with Ngorongoro and the Serengeti.
Best for birdersThe quietest months with the lowest rates. Game viewing is harder work, but baobabs in leaf against storm skies are a photographer's reward.
