Lake Manyara National Park

A jewel-box park beneath the Rift Valley wall — groundwater forest, tree-climbing lions, pink flamingo shorelines, and elephants at arm's length.

Destination Guide

Why Manyara Is a Jewel-Box Park

Ernest Hemingway called it “the loveliest lake in Africa.” Lake Manyara National Park squeezes remarkable variety into a slim 330 km² strip between the Rift Valley escarpment and an alkaline soda lake — two-thirds of which is the lake itself.

You enter through a groundwater forest that feels closer to jungle than savannah: blue monkeys and baboon troops in fig trees, fed by springs from the Rift wall. Minutes later the canopy opens to floodplains where buffalo, hippo, and thousands of flamingos line the shore.

Manyara’s signature is the tree-climbing lion — prides here habitually rest in acacia branches, a behaviour seen in only a few places in Africa. Just 90 minutes from Arusha, the park makes a superb first or last day of any Northern Circuit safari.

Wildlife Highlights

  • Tree-climbing lions draped in acacia and mahogany branches
  • Flamingo flocks colouring the soda-lake shallows pink (seasonal)
  • Elephant herds at close range in the groundwater forest
  • One of Africa’s largest baboon populations, plus blue and vervet monkeys
  • Hippo pools and 400+ bird species, from pelicans to silvery-cheeked hornbills

Experiences in the Park

Groundwater forest: the lush northern entrance zone, best for primates and elephants. Lakeshore floodplains: flamingos, waterbirds, buffalo, and big views to the Rift wall. Treetop Walkway: a 370 m suspended canopy walk — Tanzania’s first. Maji Moto hot springs: the quieter southern end, worth the drive for solitude.

“Twenty minutes in we were under a fig tree with two lionesses asleep on a branch above us. Ninety minutes from our hotel in Arusha.” — Guest review, TripAdvisor

Lake Manyara National Park FAQs

Is half a day at Manyara enough?
+
A half-day covers the forest and a stretch of lakeshore well, which is why it works as a first stop en route to Ngorongoro. Birders and photographers should consider a full day or an overnight with a night drive.
Will I actually see lions in trees?
+
Sightings are regular but never guaranteed — the behaviour is most common in the heat of the day when lions seek shade and a breeze. Your guide knows the favoured trees.
When are the flamingos there?
+
Numbers fluctuate with the lake's water level and algae blooms, generally strongest in and after the rains (roughly November to March). Some birds are present most of the year.
What is the treetop walkway like?
+
A 370-metre series of suspension bridges through the forest canopy, up to 18 m high, guided and harness-free. It takes about an hour and is great for families with children over 6.
Manyara or Tarangire if I can only do one?
+
Tarangire for big-game drama, especially elephants in dry season; Manyara for landscape variety, primates, and flamingos. If your route passes Mto wa Mbu anyway, Manyara costs you only half a day.
