Arusha National Park

Crater forests, the Momella Lakes, and giraffe on foot — a remarkably varied park just 45 minutes from town, and Tanzania's best walking-safari day trip.

Destination Guide

Why Arusha NP Is the Perfect First Day

Most safaris start with a wasted day — arrival, jet lag, waiting. Arusha National Park fixes that. Just 45 minutes from Arusha city, this compact 552 km² park packs crater forest, alkaline lakes, and the slopes of Mount Meru into a single, gloriously varied day.

Because the park has no resident lion prides and only shy leopards, it is one of the few places in northern Tanzania where you can leave the vehicle: guided walking safaris bring you within respectful distance of giraffe, zebra, and buffalo, and canoe trips paddle the Small Momella Lake past hippo and waterbuck.

The scenery shifts constantly — the jungle-clad Ngurdoto Crater (a ‘mini Ngorongoro’), the multi-hued Momella Lakes with their flamingo flocks, and montane forest alive with black-and-white colobus monkeys. On clear mornings both Meru and Kilimanjaro show themselves.

Park Highlights

  • Walking safaris among giraffe, zebra, and buffalo — with an armed ranger guide
  • Canoeing the Momella Lakes past hippo, with flamingos in season
  • Black-and-white colobus monkeys in the montane forest
  • Ngurdoto Crater — a 3 km-wide forested caldera with buffalo herds on its floor
  • Twin views of Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro on clear mornings

Zones of the Park

Ngurdoto Crater: rim viewpoints over a swampy, buffalo-dotted caldera floor (no vehicle descent — it stays pristine). Momella Lakes: seven shallow alkaline lakes, each a different shade, with flamingo and pelican. Meru slopes: forest, waterfalls, and the start of the Mount Meru trek. Serengeti Ndogo: the open ‘little Serengeti’ grassland near the gate, busy with zebra and warthog.

“Walking beside wild giraffe an hour after leaving our Arusha hotel was surreal. The perfect warm-up day before the big parks.” — Guest review, TripAdvisor

Arusha National Park FAQs

Is Arusha National Park worth it with the big parks on my itinerary?
+
Yes — precisely because it offers what they don't: walking and canoeing among wildlife. It converts your arrival or departure day into a real safari day instead of dead time.
Why can you walk here but not in the Serengeti?
+
The park has no resident lion prides, which makes ranger-led walking legally permitted and genuinely safe. An armed ranger accompanies every walk as standard.
Will I see the Big Five?
+
No — there are no lions or rhinos here. You come for giraffe (the densest population in Tanzania), buffalo, elephant, colobus monkeys, flamingos, and the chance to be on foot among them.
Can I combine it with a Kilimanjaro or Meru trek?
+
Perfectly. The park is the trailhead for Mount Meru, and a gentle walking day here is a smart way to start acclimatising and shake off jet lag before any climb.
What should I bring for the day?
+
Light layers, walking shoes, sunscreen, and binoculars. Mornings start cool at this altitude (~1,500 m); we provide picnic lunch, park fees, guide, and ranger in our day-trip price.
