Nyerere National Park (Selous)

Tanzania's largest national park — boat safaris on the Rufiji River, walking among big game, and wild dog country, a short flight from Dar or Zanzibar.

Why Nyerere Is the Wild South

Carved from the legendary Selous Game Reserve in 2019 and named for Tanzania’s founding president, Nyerere National Park covers roughly 30,000 km² — the largest national park in Tanzania and one of the largest in Africa, with a visitor count a small fraction of the Serengeti’s.

Its heart is the Rufiji River, East Africa’s mightiest, braiding into lagoons and palm-lined channels alive with hippo, outsized crocodile, and elephant crossing at dusk. The river enables what the northern parks can’t: boat safaris that drift you past drinking herds at eye level.

Nyerere is also one of Africa’s last strongholds of the endangered African wild dog, and one of few parks where walking safaris are a core activity rather than a novelty. Access is easy — a 45-minute flight from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar — making it the perfect wild interlude in a beach holiday.

Wildlife Highlights

  • Boat safaris on the Rufiji — hippo, giant crocodiles, and elephants at the waterline
  • African wild dog — one of the continent’s most important remaining populations
  • Walking safaris with armed guides, tracking big game on foot
  • Lion prides, big buffalo herds, and greater kudu in the miombo woodland
  • Superb river birding: African skimmers, fish eagles, and carmine bee-eaters

How a Visit Works

Fly-in: daily 45-minute flights from Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar to the park airstrips; road access (~5–6 hours from Dar) suits overlanders. The photographic zone: lodges cluster along the Rufiji and its five lakes north of the river. Activities: most camps rotate game drives, boat safaris, and guided walks — a variety no northern park can match in one stay.

“Sundowner on a boat, elephants swimming the channel in front of us, fish eagles overhead. The Selous delivers a different Africa.” — Guest review, TripAdvisor

Nyerere National Park (Selous) FAQs

Is it Selous or Nyerere?
+
Both names refer to the same ecosystem. In 2019 the northern, photographic sector of the old Selous Game Reserve became Nyerere National Park; most camps and guides still use the names interchangeably.
How does Nyerere compare to the Serengeti?
+
Fewer vehicles by an order of magnitude, a huge river at the centre of everything, and activities — boating and walking — the Serengeti can't offer. The trade-off: no migration mega-herds. Many seasoned safari-goers prefer the south.
What are my chances of seeing wild dogs?
+
Among the best in Africa, especially June to August when packs den and stay in one area. Sightings are never guaranteed, but guides share den locations and success rates in season are high.
How do I get there from Zanzibar?
+
A direct 45-minute light-aircraft flight lands you at the park airstrips mid-morning — which is why a 3-night Nyerere add-on works so well inside a Zanzibar beach holiday.
Is there malaria risk?
+
As in all low-lying Tanzanian parks, yes — prophylaxis is recommended, and river camps provide nets and screening. Speak to a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before departure.
