Mikumi National Park

Tanzania's most accessible big-game park — open Mkata floodplains often compared to the Serengeti, an easy drive from Dar es Salaam.

Why Mikumi Is the Easy Door to the South

Mikumi is Tanzania’s fourth-largest national park and, for travellers based in Dar es Salaam, by far the most reachable. At roughly 3,230 square kilometres it spreads across the Mkata floodplain, a wide grassland basin hemmed by the Uluguru and Rubeho mountains — open country that draws constant comparison with the southern Serengeti.

The floodplain is the heart of the park. Lion prides patrol it, big elephant and buffalo herds move across it, and the hippo pools near the main road reliably deliver. Giraffe, zebra, eland, and the handsome greater kudu are all regulars, and the open terrain makes for unusually easy game viewing.

What sets Mikumi apart is access. The surfaced TANZAM highway runs right through the park, putting it within about a five-hour drive of Dar es Salaam — no light aircraft required. That makes it the perfect first safari, a short weekend escape, or the opening leg of a longer Southern Circuit route through Nyerere and Ruaha.

Wildlife Highlights

  • Lion prides and big elephant and buffalo herds on the open Mkata floodplain
  • Reliable hippo pools and crocodile sightings near the main road
  • Giraffe, zebra, eland, impala, and the elegant greater kudu
  • Over 400 bird species, including lilac-breasted rollers and bateleur eagles
  • Open, Serengeti-like scenery framed by the Uluguru Mountains

How a Visit Works

Mikumi is reached by road from Dar es Salaam in about five hours along the surfaced highway, or as a short hop from Morogoro. Game drives focus on the Mkata floodplain in the north, where the wildlife concentrates. Most guests stay one or two nights, often as the first stop on a Southern Circuit safari continuing to Udzungwa, Ruaha, or Nyerere.

We left Dar after breakfast and were watching lions on the floodplain by mid-afternoon. For a no-fly safari, nothing in Tanzania is this easy. — Guest review, TripAdvisor

Mikumi National Park FAQs

Can I visit Mikumi without flying?
+
Yes — that is its great advantage. Mikumi is about a five-hour drive from Dar es Salaam on a surfaced highway, making it Tanzania's most accessible big-game park and an easy weekend safari.
How does Mikumi compare to the Serengeti?
+
The open Mkata floodplain looks strikingly similar and holds lions, elephants, buffalo, and plains game. It is smaller and quieter, with no migration, but for accessibility and value it is hard to beat.
How many days do I need?
+
One or two nights is enough to see the floodplain properly. Many travellers use Mikumi as the first stop on a longer Southern Circuit route to Udzungwa, Ruaha, and Nyerere.
Is Mikumi good for a first safari?
+
Excellent — short travel time, easy open-country game viewing, and a strong chance of lions and elephants make it a confident introduction to a Tanzanian safari.
What is the best time to visit Mikumi?
+
June to October for the densest wildlife on the floodplain. The green season from November is beautiful and far better value, with outstanding birding.
