Saadani National Park

The only Tanzanian park on the Indian Ocean — where elephants walk the beach, lions roam coastal bush, and boat safaris drift up the Wami River.

Why Saadani Is Bush and Ocean in One Place

Saadani is the only national park in Tanzania where the bush runs straight into the Indian Ocean. Covering around 1,100 square kilometres on the central coast, opposite Zanzibar, it joins classic savanna wildlife with palm-lined beaches, tidal mangroves, and a wide river mouth — a combination found nowhere else in the country.

The result is a safari with a coastal twist. Elephants and buffalo sometimes wander onto the sand, lions and giraffe move through the coastal bush, and green turtles nest on the beaches. The Wami River, threading through the park to the sea, offers boat safaris past hippos, crocodiles, and a riot of waterbirds — a gentle, photogenic alternative to the game drive.

Saadani’s great advantage is access and pace. It is an easy hop by boat or light aircraft from Zanzibar and a straightforward drive or charter from Dar es Salaam, making it the perfect way to add a few wild days to a beach holiday without a long journey inland.

Wildlife Highlights

  • The only Tanzanian park on the Indian Ocean — beach and bush together
  • Wami River boat safaris with hippo, crocodile, and superb birdlife
  • Elephant, buffalo, lion, giraffe, and waterbuck in coastal savanna
  • Green turtle nesting on the park’s beaches (seasonal)
  • Mangrove channels, palm-fringed sand, and an easy link to Zanzibar

How a Visit Works

Saadani is reached by light aircraft from Zanzibar or Dar es Salaam, by boat from Zanzibar, or by road from Dar (around four to six hours). Activities mix beach time with game drives and Wami River boat safaris. Most guests stay two or three nights as a bush extension to a Zanzibar or Dar beach holiday. The long rains in April and May are best avoided.

We watched elephants on the beach in the morning and were back swimming in the ocean by lunch. A safari and a beach holiday in the same place — it shouldn’t work, but it does. — Guest review, TripAdvisor

Saadani National Park FAQs

What makes Saadani unique?
+
It is the only national park in Tanzania that borders the Indian Ocean, so you can combine classic savanna game viewing with beaches, mangroves, and river boat safaris in a single destination.
How do I get to Saadani from Zanzibar?
+
By a short light-aircraft flight or by boat across the channel, both of which make Saadani an easy two-or-three-night bush add-on to a Zanzibar beach holiday.
What wildlife will I see?
+
Elephant, buffalo, lion, giraffe, and waterbuck in the coastal bush, hippo and crocodile on the Wami River, abundant birdlife, and — in season — nesting green turtles on the beaches.
Is the wildlife as dense as the big parks?
+
No — Saadani's game is more dispersed than the Serengeti or Ruaha. Its appeal is the unique blend of beach, river, and bush rather than sheer animal numbers.
When is the best time to visit?
+
June to October and the short dry spell in January and February offer the best weather and game viewing. The long rains in April and May are best avoided.
