Extraordinary African Safaris
A green, hilly wilderness in the Kagera highlands near the Rwandan border — one of Tanzania's newest parks and among its least visited.
Rumanyika-Karagwe is one of the cluster of new national parks Tanzania created in 2019, set in the rolling Kagera highlands of the country’s far north-west near the Rwandan border. Covering roughly 800 square kilometres, it is a softer, greener landscape than the classic safari plains — grassy hills, valley wetlands, and patches of woodland.
Carved from a former game reserve once known for its rhino, the park today protects elephant, buffalo, topi, roan antelope, bushbuck, and waterbuck, with hippo in its wetlands and a varied birdlife taking advantage of the wetter highland climate. Wildlife is dispersed and still recovering, but the scenery is gentle and distinctive.
This is pioneering territory for travellers drawn to Tanzania’s lesser-known corners and the cultural depth of the historic Karagwe kingdom. With minimal infrastructure, it rewards a well-prepared, guided approach and combines with the wider Lake Victoria zone and the lakeside town of Bukoba.
Rumanyika-Karagwe is reached overland from Bukoba or Mwanza through the Kagera highlands. Facilities are basic and developing, so visits work best as guided expeditions combined with the wider Lake Victoria zone. It appeals to travellers interested in frontier wilderness and the cultural history of the Karagwe region rather than polished lodge comforts.
Green hills rolling to the horizon, a herd of topi on the slope, and the deep history of the Karagwe kingdom all around. This corner of Tanzania feels truly undiscovered. — Guest review, TripAdvisor

Best overallBrief storms deepen the green of the highlands and bring migrant birds. Fresh, quiet, and scenic.
Best for birdingWarm and lush between the rains, the hills at their most vivid. Tracks remain largely passable.
Best sceneryHeavy highland rain makes tracks difficult. The wettest, quietest, and greenest months.
