Extraordinary African Safaris
A rocky little island just off Mwanza city — Tanzania's smallest national park, and the easiest half-day escape on Lake Victoria.
Saanane is the smallest national park in Tanzania — and the only one within a city’s limits. Just a couple of square kilometres of granite, grassland, and lake, it sits a short boat ride from the centre of Mwanza, the busy port on the southern shore of Lake Victoria. Once a small zoo, it became a national park in 2013.
Despite its size, the island makes a charming half-day outing. Impala, rock hyrax, vervet monkeys, and a few introduced antelope wander the rocks, monitor lizards bask at the water’s edge, and crocodiles patrol the shallows. The granite boulders Mwanza is famous for are everywhere, and the birdlife — fish eagles, kingfishers, herons — is excellent.
Saanane is not a big-game destination; it is a relaxed, accessible nature escape and a perfect way to spend a few hours when passing through Mwanza on the way to or from the Serengeti’s Western Corridor, Rubondo Island, or the Lake Victoria zone. Walking trails, picnic spots, and sunset views over the lake make it a local favourite.
Saanane is reached by a short boat transfer from the park jetty in Mwanza, making it an easy half-day or sunset trip with no overnight needed. Exploration is on foot along gentle trails. It is an ideal way to break up a stay in Mwanza when travelling to or from the Serengeti’s Western Corridor, Rubondo Island, or the wider Lake Victoria zone.
A ten-minute boat ride from the middle of Mwanza and suddenly we were among impala and giant granite boulders, watching the sun set over Lake Victoria. The perfect city escape. — Guest review, TripAdvisor
