Extraordinary African Safaris
A long, peaceful fishing village south of Paje — turquoise shallows, an authentic Swahili pace, and some of the warmest welcomes on Zanzibar.
Jambiani runs for several kilometres along Zanzibar’s south-east coast, just south of Paje, and it keeps the working soul of a Swahili fishing village more than almost anywhere else on the island. Brightly painted dhows rest on dazzling sand, fishermen head out at dawn, and women tend seaweed farms in the shallows at low tide.
The beach itself is classic east coast — broad white sand and luminous turquoise water over a reef-protected lagoon, with the same big tidal swing as Paje. Accommodation is mostly small, locally rooted guesthouses and boutique hotels, and the atmosphere is gentle and unhurried, with real day-to-day village life woven through it.
Jambiani suits travellers who want beauty with authenticity and a slower pace, often combined with livelier Paje just up the coast for a touch more activity. It is around an hour from Stone Town and the airport.
Jambiani is about an hour by road from Stone Town and the airport, just south of Paje. Accommodation leans towards intimate, locally owned guesthouses and boutique hotels. As elsewhere on the east coast, swimming is best around high tide. Most travellers stay three to five nights, often as a beach extension to a safari.
The most authentic beach we found on Zanzibar — fishermen, seaweed farmers, painted dhows, and a welcome so warm we extended twice. — Guest review, TripAdvisor
Warm, sunny days, low humidity, and calm seas. The most reliable window for beaches, diving, and dhow trips.
Best overallHot and bright between the rains, with excellent water clarity and a festive high-season feel around the New Year.
Best for the beachBrief afternoon showers freshen the islands; mornings usually stay clear. Quieter and better value.
Best for valueThe wettest stretch, with heavier rain and some smaller places closing. The lowest rates of the year.
