Why Matemwe Is the Gateway to Mnemba

Matemwe runs along Zanzibar’s north-east coast, a long, tranquil stretch of white sand looking out to Mnemba Atoll on the horizon. That position is its trump card: the island’s finest reef is right offshore, making Matemwe one of the best bases on Zanzibar for diving and snorkelling.

Ashore, it remains a quiet fishing community where life moves at a gentle pace. There is little of the bustle of Nungwi or the kite scene of Paje — instead a string of barefoot-luxury lodges and laid-back guesthouses spread along the shore, with the same big east-coast tides revealing sandbars and reef flats twice a day.

Matemwe suits travellers who want a peaceful, refined beach with superb water activities on the doorstep, and it is a favourite for honeymoons. It is around an hour and a quarter from Stone Town and the airport.

What to See & Do

  • The closest beach base to Mnemba Atoll’s world-class reef
  • Outstanding diving and snorkelling straight off the coast
  • A peaceful, unhurried fishing-village atmosphere
  • Barefoot-luxury lodges popular for honeymoons
  • Sandbars and reef flats revealed by the dramatic tides

How a Visit Works

Matemwe is about an hour and a quarter by road from Stone Town and the airport. Accommodation ranges from intimate luxury lodges to relaxed guesthouses. Snorkelling and diving trips to Mnemba Atoll leave from the beach. As elsewhere on the east coast, swimming is tide-dependent. Most travellers stay three to five nights, frequently as a honeymoon or safari beach finish.

We dived Mnemba in the morning, had the beach almost to ourselves in the afternoon, and watched the stars from our deck at night. The most peaceful corner of Zanzibar. — Guest review, TripAdvisor
