Why Michamvi Is the East Coast’s Sunset Secret

Michamvi sits at the tip of the peninsula that closes off Chwaka Bay to the north of Paje. Because the land curls around, its western shore faces back across the bay — making Michamvi the rare spot on Zanzibar’s sunrise coast where you can also watch the sun set over the water, a quirk that has drawn a cluster of stylish retreats.

It is quiet and uncrowded. The peninsula has two characters: the open ocean side with classic east-coast tides and reef, and the sheltered bay side with calmer water and the famous sunsets. Between them are coves, rocky headlands, and a scattering of upscale boutique hotels and beach clubs rather than big resorts.

Michamvi suits couples and travellers seeking seclusion and refinement within easy reach of livelier Paje just to the south. It is around an hour and a quarter from Stone Town and the airport.

What to See & Do

  • The only east-coast corner with sunsets over the sea, across Chwaka Bay
  • Quiet coves and headlands with calm, sheltered bay-side water
  • Stylish boutique retreats and beach clubs rather than big resorts
  • Classic ocean-side reef and tides on the eastern shore
  • Close to Paje’s kite scene yet a world apart in pace

How a Visit Works

Michamvi is about an hour and a quarter by road from Stone Town and the airport, on the peninsula just north of Paje. Accommodation is mostly upscale boutique hotels and beach clubs. The bay side offers calmer, sunset-facing water, while the ocean side follows the usual east-coast tides. Most travellers stay three to five nights for seclusion and romance.

We didn’t know you could watch the sun set over the sea on Zanzibar’s east coast — Michamvi proved us wrong every evening, with barely another soul around. — Guest review, TripAdvisor

Michamvi FAQs

Why is Michamvi special?
+
Its peninsula curls so that the western shore faces across Chwaka Bay — making it the one part of Zanzibar's sunrise east coast where you can watch the sun set over the water. It is also exceptionally quiet.
Is Michamvi good for couples?
+
Very — its seclusion, stylish boutique retreats, and rare sea-facing sunsets make it a favourite for honeymooners and couples wanting privacy and romance.
Can you swim at Michamvi?
+
The sheltered bay side offers calmer water for longer; the ocean side follows the usual east-coast tides, best around high tide. Many hotels have pools.
How does Michamvi compare to Paje?
+
Michamvi is quieter, more upscale, and more secluded, while Paje just to the south is livelier and centred on kitesurfing. They are close enough to enjoy both.
When is the best time to visit?

June to October and December to February for the driest, calmest weather. The long rains in April and May are the wettest, quietest months.
