Extraordinary African Safaris
A short hop from Stone Town — giant Aldabra tortoises, a curious colonial history, and a quick reef snorkel make this the island's easiest half-day excursion.
Prison Island — properly Changuu — lies just off Stone Town, a 20-to-30-minute boat ride across the channel and the most popular half-day trip on Zanzibar. Despite the name, the prison built here in the 1890s never actually held prisoners; it served instead as a quarantine station, and the handsome colonial buildings remain.
Today the island is best known for its colony of giant Aldabra tortoises, a gift from the Seychelles over a century ago. Some are well over 100 years old, and visitors can walk among them in their sanctuary — an easy, charming encounter that delights families and photographers alike.
Beyond the tortoises there is a small beach, a shallow reef for snorkelling, and the ruins to explore, all in a couple of unhurried hours. It is the perfect light excursion from Stone Town, ideal for arrival or departure days when you want sea air without committing to a full beach transfer.
Prison Island is reached by a short boat trip from the Stone Town seafront, easily arranged as a half-day excursion. A small entrance fee supports the tortoise sanctuary. Visits combine the tortoises, the historic buildings, and time on the beach or snorkelling. It is a perfect add-on to a Stone Town stay or a relaxed activity on an arrival or departure day.
A 20-minute boat ride and we were walking among tortoises older than the buildings around them. The kids loved it, and it was the perfect easy morning out of Stone Town. — Guest review, TripAdvisor
