Extraordinary African Safaris
The green highland town at Ngorongoro's doorstep — coffee estates, farm lodges, and the last comfortable base before the Crater and Serengeti.
Karatu is the bustling highland town just outside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area gate, the last sizeable settlement before the Crater and the long road into the Serengeti. Set among green hills at around 1,500 metres, it is surrounded by coffee estates and small farms — its nickname, ‘Safari Junction’, captures its role on the Northern Circuit.
For travellers it is an excellent base. A cluster of farm lodges and country hotels on the outskirts offers a comfortable, scenic alternative to staying inside the costly Conservation Area, putting you within a short drive of the Crater rim for an early descent. Coffee-estate tours, cultural visits to the local Iraqw people, and walks to nearby Lake Eyasi and the Ngorongoro Highlands fill any spare time.
Karatu suits travellers who want highland comfort and a relaxed pace between the big parks. It sits about three hours from Arusha on the main safari road, a natural overnight on the way to or from Ngorongoro and the Serengeti.
Karatu is about three hours by road from Arusha on the main Northern Circuit route, just before the Ngorongoro gate. Farm lodges and hotels cluster on the town’s outskirts. Most travellers spend one or two nights here as a base for the Crater, often combined with a coffee tour or cultural visit, before continuing into the Serengeti.
Staying at a coffee-farm lodge in Karatu meant we reached the Crater rim before the crowds and came back to green hills and good food. The perfect Ngorongoro base. — Guest review, TripAdvisor
Clear, mild highland days and the peak safari window, with the Crater at its best. The busiest and most reliable time.
Best overallWarm and bright between the rains, pairing well with the Serengeti calving season. Excellent and slightly quieter.
Best second windowBrief showers green the hills; good value and lush scenery around the farm lodges.
Best for valueThe wettest stretch, with the highlands at their greenest and the lowest rates. Showers can be heavy.
