Extraordinary African Safaris
The 'Cradle of Mankind' between Ngorongoro and the Serengeti — where the Leakeys uncovered some of the oldest evidence of human ancestors on Earth.
Olduvai Gorge — more correctly Oldupai, after the wild sisal that grows here — is a steep-sided ravine cutting across the plains between the Ngorongoro highlands and the Serengeti. It is one of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world, the place that did more than any other to establish East Africa as the cradle of humankind.
From the 1930s, Louis and Mary Leakey and their team uncovered an extraordinary sequence of fossils and stone tools spanning nearly two million years, including the skull of Paranthropus boisei and remains of Homo habilis. Nearby, at Laetoli, Mary Leakey found 3.6-million-year-old hominin footprints preserved in volcanic ash — among the earliest evidence of upright walking. A small museum on the gorge rim tells the story and displays casts of the key finds.
Olduvai sits directly on the main road between Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, making it an easy and meaningful stop on a Northern Circuit safari. A visit adds real depth to the journey, turning the drive across the plains into a passage through the deep history of our own species.
Olduvai Gorge lies on the main road between the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. A visit centres on the rim-top museum and a viewpoint over the gorge, with guided talks; some itineraries include a short walk into the gorge. It is an easy one-to-two-hour stop slotted into the drive between the two parks. Conservation Area fees apply.
Standing on the rim of Olduvai, holding a cast of a two-million-year-old tool, the safari suddenly felt like a journey into our own origins. — Guest review, TripAdvisor
Clear, dry conditions and the peak safari window, with the gorge easily combined with Serengeti and Crater game drives.
Best overallWarm and bright between the rains, pairing with the Serengeti calving season on the nearby southern plains.
Best second windowBrief showers green the plains; the museum visit is unaffected and the drive remains easy.
Best for valueThe wettest stretch, when the surrounding plains are lush and quiet. The museum stays open.
