Extraordinary African Safaris
A jewel-like caldera in the Ngorongoro Highlands — a deep crater lake flushed pink with flamingos, reached on foot with views to Ol Doinyo Lengai.
Empakaai is a smaller, quieter sibling of the famous Ngorongoro Crater, set deep in the green Ngorongoro Highlands to the north-east. About six kilometres across, its steep forested walls drop some 300 metres to a soda lake that fills more than half the crater floor — and that lake is often stained pink with thousands of flamingos.
Unlike Ngorongoro, Empakaai is explored on foot. A guided walk descends through montane forest alive with birds and buffalo sign to the lakeshore, where the silence and the flamingos make for an extraordinary contrast with the busy main crater. From the rim, on a clear day, the views stretch to the perfect cone of Ol Doinyo Lengai — Tanzania’s only active volcano — and beyond to Lake Natron and the Rift Valley.
Empakaai is for travellers who want to walk, escape the crowds, and see a wilder, greener side of the Ngorongoro area. It is reached by a high, scenic drive from the main crater and pairs naturally with a cultural Maasai visit or an Ol Doinyo Lengai and Lake Natron extension.
Empakaai is reached by a high, scenic drive of two to three hours from the Ngorongoro Crater area, within the Conservation Area. Visits centre on a guided walk along the rim and down to the lake, accompanied by an armed ranger. It is usually done as a full-day trip or as part of a multi-day highlands walking and Lake Natron itinerary. A reasonable level of fitness is needed for the descent and climb back.
We had the whole crater to ourselves — a walk down through forest to a pink lake of flamingos, with Ol Doinyo Lengai on the horizon. The antidote to the crowds at the main crater. — Guest review, TripAdvisor
Firm trails for the descent, clear rim views, and comfortable walking weather. The best window for an Empakaai trek.
Best overallWarm and mostly dry between the rains, with green slopes and good flamingo numbers on the lake.
Best for flamingosBrief showers deepen the highland green; trails are muddier but the crater is at its lushest.
Best for sceneryThe wettest stretch, when the steep forest trail becomes slippery and harder going. The quietest months.
