Extraordinary African Safaris
A towering waterfall on Kilimanjaro's lower slopes near Moshi — a forest walk, a Chagga coffee experience, and one of the region's best day trips.
Materuni is a Chagga farming village on the lower southern slopes of Kilimanjaro, a short drive above Moshi, and the gateway to one of the region’s most popular day trips. From the village a green trail leads through banana and coffee plots and patches of rainforest to a waterfall that plunges some 80 metres down a mossy cliff into a cold plunge pool.
The walk itself is the experience — about 45 minutes each way through lush, cultivated mountainside with views back over the plains, often with Kilimanjaro’s foothills rising behind. The bravest swim in the chilly pool at the base; everyone enjoys the spray and the setting.
The classic add-on is a Chagga coffee tour back in the village, where families demonstrate the whole process from picking and pulping to roasting over a fire and grinding by hand, finishing with a cup of their own coffee and traditional songs. Materuni pairs perfectly with the Chemka Hot Springs for a full, rewarding day around Moshi and Kilimanjaro.
Materuni is about a 45-minute drive from Moshi up onto Kilimanjaro’s slopes, followed by a guided walk of roughly 45 minutes each way to the falls. Local guides and a small village fee support the community. The coffee tour is the usual add-on. It is an easy half-to-full-day outing for most reasonably active visitors; bring sturdy shoes and a swimsuit for the pool.
A gorgeous walk through coffee farms to a thundering waterfall, then roasting and grinding coffee with a Chagga family — one of the best days of our whole trip. — Guest review, TripAdvisor
Firm, comfortable trails and clear views, the easiest and most popular time for the walk and coffee tour.
Best for walkingThe waterfall runs stronger and the slopes are lush; trails are a little muddier but the falls are at their best.
Best for the waterfallWarm and mostly dry between the rains, with green scenery and good walking conditions.
Best second windowThe fullest, most dramatic falls, but the steepest, most slippery trails. Come prepared for mud.
