Extraordinary African Safaris
The signature hike of Udzungwa — a 170-metre three-tier waterfall deep in Eastern Arc rainforest, with a swim in the pool at its foot.
The Sanje Waterfalls are the headline hike of Udzungwa Mountains National Park, and one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Tanzania. Fed by streams off the Eastern Arc mountains, the falls drop around 170 metres in three distinct tiers through dense rainforest, sending up a cloud of spray that catches the light above the forest canopy.
Reaching them is a proper rainforest hike. A guided trail climbs steadily for a couple of hours through forest alive with birds, butterflies, and the chance of endemic primates such as the Udzungwa red colobus overhead. The route reaches the foot of the falls — where there is a pool to swim in — a midway viewpoint, and the top of the cascade, with the option to picnic to the sound of falling water.
Sanje is the centrepiece of a visit to Udzungwa, Tanzania’s great trekking park, and a natural pairing with a Mikumi safari just to the north. It suits active travellers who want to swap the game-drive vehicle for a forest trail and a swim beneath a thundering fall.
The Sanje Waterfalls lie in Udzungwa Mountains National Park, reached by road and usually combined with a Mikumi safari to the north. The hike is a guided round trip of roughly four to six hours with a steady climb; park fees and a guide are required. Reasonable fitness and sturdy footwear are essential, and a swimsuit if you plan to use the pool. The drier months give firmer trails.
A sweaty climb through the rainforest, red colobus crashing overhead, then a swim in the pool beneath a 170-metre waterfall. The best hike of our Tanzania trip. — Guest review, TripAdvisor
Firmer trails and safer river crossings make this the best window for the hike, with the forest still impressive.
Best for trekkingThe falls run stronger and the forest is vivid; trails are muddier but the cascade is at its most powerful.
Best for the fallsWarm and humid with full canopy; birding and butterflies are excellent, the paths slippery.
Best for wildlifeThe fullest, most dramatic falls but the most difficult trails, with some routes hard going. Come prepared.
