Why Tanga Is the Quiet Northern Coast

Tanga is Tanzania’s second-largest port and the main city of the north coast, yet it remains refreshingly low-key — a relaxed, leafy place of faded colonial and Swahili architecture, sea breezes, and an unhurried pace far removed from the bustle of Dar es Salaam. Once a hub of the sisal trade, it has an appealing, slightly time-worn character.

Its surroundings hold the surprises. Just outside the city are the Amboni Caves, the most extensive limestone cave system in East Africa, wrapped in local legend, and the Galanos sulphur hot springs nearby. The coast offers quiet beaches, mangroves, and offshore reefs and islands for snorkelling and diving, while the ruins of Tongoni, with their old Shirazi tombs and mosque, recall the medieval Swahili trade.

Tanga is also the natural coastal gateway to the Usambara Mountains and the Amani forest inland. It suits travellers wanting an authentic, untouristed slice of the Swahili coast and a base linking sea, history, and highlands in north-eastern Tanzania.

What to See & Do

  • A relaxed, untouristed Swahili coastal city with colonial-era streets
  • The Amboni Caves, East Africa’s largest limestone cave system
  • The Galanos sulphur hot springs near the city
  • Tongoni Ruins and offshore reefs for snorkelling and diving
  • The coastal gateway to the Usambaras and Amani forest

How a Visit Works

Tanga is reached by road from Dar es Salaam or Arusha, by air to its small airport, or as a stop on the north-coast route. The city has modest hotels. Day trips take in the Amboni Caves, Galanos springs, Tongoni Ruins, and the coast, while Tanga also serves as the gateway inland to the Usambaras and Amani. Most travellers stay one or two nights. The drier months are most comfortable.

A wonderfully laid-back coastal city — caves wrapped in legend, sulphur springs, old Swahili ruins, and not a tour bus in sight. Tanga is the coast as it used to be. — Guest review, TripAdvisor
