Bagamoyo

A hauntingly historic town north of Dar es Salaam — once the capital of German East Africa and a major caravan and slave-trade port, now a quiet heritage coast.

Why Bagamoyo Is the Coast’s Living History

Bagamoyo is one of the most historically resonant towns on the Tanzanian coast, an easy hour or so north of Dar es Salaam. For much of the 19th century it was the most important trading port on the East African coast — the end of the caravan routes from the interior, a hub of the ivory and slave trades, and the first capital of German East Africa. Its very name is said to carry the sorrow of that past.

That layered history is written into the town. The atmospheric old quarter holds carved Swahili doors, German colonial buildings, an old fort, and the historic Catholic mission with one of the oldest churches in East Africa and a moving museum. Just south lie the Kaole Ruins, with the remains of 13th-century mosques and Shirazi tombs that predate the town itself.

Today Bagamoyo is quiet and creative, home to a respected college of arts and a relaxed beach scene, with dhows still drawn up on the sand. It suits travellers interested in history and culture within easy reach of Dar es Salaam, and makes a meaningful coastal counterpoint to a safari or Zanzibar trip.

How a Visit Works

Bagamoyo is about an hour to ninety minutes by road north of Dar es Salaam, an easy day trip or short stay. The town has beach hotels and guesthouses. Visits centre on a guided walk of the historic old town and mission, the Kaole Ruins, the arts college, and the beach. Most travellers come on a day trip from Dar or stay one to two nights. The drier months are most comfortable.
