Materuni Waterfalls & Coffee Tour

Hike to an 80-metre waterfall through Chagga farmland on Kilimanjaro's slopes, then pick, roast, and brew your own coffee the traditional way.

Experience Guide

On the lush southern slopes of Kilimanjaro above Moshi, the Chagga village of Materuni offers one of northern Tanzania’s most rewarding cultural days. A gentle hike through banana and coffee groves leads to the spectacular 80-metre Materuni waterfall, plunging into a cool pool you can swim in.

Back in the village, a Chagga family walks you through coffee from cherry to cup — picking the beans, pounding them in a wooden mortar to a rhythmic work song, roasting over a wood fire, and finally drinking what you’ve made. It’s hands-on, genuinely fun, and consistently a surprise highlight, especially before or after a Kilimanjaro climb.

Is It Worth It?

This is the cultural day we recommend most around Moshi — affordable, active, and authentic, run directly by Chagga families so the money stays local. The waterfall hike is easy but can be slippery in the rains; wear proper shoes. It pairs perfectly as a rest or recovery day around a Kilimanjaro climb.

Good to Know

  • Wear grippy shoes — trails can be slippery
  • Bring swimwear for the waterfall pool
  • Run directly by Chagga families
  • Ideal before/after a Kilimanjaro climb
