Extraordinary African Safaris
Trek forested mountains plunging to Lake Tanganyika to sit among wild chimpanzees — one of Africa's most magical and remote wildlife encounters.
Mahale is one of the most extraordinary places in Africa: a range of forested mountains rising straight from the impossibly clear waters of Lake Tanganyika, in Tanzania’s remote far west, home to roughly a thousand wild chimpanzees. Trekking into the forest to sit quietly among a habituated chimp community — watching them groom, play, and forage metres away — is a profoundly moving experience.
Reached only by light aircraft and boat, with a few exquisite camps on the lakeshore, Mahale combines world-class primate encounters with white-sand beaches and snorkelling in the lake. It’s a bucket-list journey for the few who make it.
Light aircraft then a boat along the lakeshore to camp.
Hike with trackers to find the habituated chimp community.
Sit quietly among wild chimpanzees as they forage and play.
Relax on white sand and snorkel the clear lake.
A genuine bucket-list experience and, for many, the highlight of all their African travels — but it's remote, premium, and effort-intensive: the trek can be steep and hot, and chimp sightings, while very likely, aren't guaranteed. Permits and camps are limited, so book well ahead. Often paired with Katavi.

These are the destinations we most often pair with Mahale Mountains Chimpanzee Trekking, based on route flow, season, and how the wider itinerary fits together.
