Extraordinary African Safaris
A lesser-known cascade on Kilimanjaro's foothills — a quiet forest walk to a hidden waterfall and a cool, uncrowded escape near Moshi.
Choma Waterfalls are one of the lesser-known cascades on the green foothills of Kilimanjaro, an alternative for travellers who want a waterfall walk without the steady stream of visitors at busier spots. Set among forest and small farms, the falls tumble through a leafy gorge into a cool pool, fed by streams running off the mountain.
The appeal is the quiet and the scenery. A guided walk leads down through cultivated slopes and patches of native forest, with birdsong, butterflies, and glimpses of the surrounding hills, to the falls themselves. It is an easy, refreshing outing rather than a major hike, and the relative obscurity means you often have the place largely to yourself.
Choma works well as a half-day trip from Moshi, alone or combined with the more famous Materuni Waterfalls and the Chemka Hot Springs for a full day exploring Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes. It suits travellers who like to find the quieter corners.
Choma Waterfalls are reached by road from Moshi onto Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes, followed by a guided walk with a local guide and a small community fee. It is an easy half-day outing for most reasonably active visitors. Sturdy shoes are useful, and it can be combined with Materuni and Chemka for a fuller day on the mountain’s foothills.
We wanted a waterfall without the crowds, and Choma delivered — a peaceful forest walk and a hidden cascade we had entirely to ourselves. — Guest review, TripAdvisor
Firm, comfortable trails and clear views, the easiest time for the forest walk to the falls.
Best for walkingThe falls run stronger and the slopes are green; the trail is a little muddier but the cascade is at its best.
Best for the waterfallWarm and mostly dry between the rains, with green scenery and good walking.
Best second windowThe fullest falls but the muddiest, most slippery trails. Come prepared for wet conditions.
