Why Chumbe Is Zanzibar’s Conservation Pioneer

Chumbe is a small island a short boat ride south-west of Stone Town that has become a model for marine conservation in East Africa. Established in the 1990s as one of the first privately managed marine parks in the world, it protects a pristine coral reef sanctuary and a rare coral-rag forest, run almost entirely on sustainable principles.

The reef is the reason to come. Because it has been protected for decades, the shallow coral garden along the island’s western shore is extraordinarily healthy — a snorkelling trail through brilliant coral and more than 400 species of fish, with green turtles often gliding past. Ashore, nature trails wind through forest sheltering the rare coco de mer crab and roosting flying foxes.

Chumbe is a day trip or an overnight in one of seven solar-powered eco-bungalows, with proceeds funding conservation and local education. It suits travellers who care about doing tourism well, and it is an easy, meaningful add-on to a Stone Town stay.

What to See & Do

  • A decades-protected coral reef sanctuary in superb health
  • A guided snorkelling trail over coral and 400+ fish species
  • A rare coral-rag forest with giant coconut crabs and flying foxes
  • Award-winning, fully sustainable eco-tourism funding conservation
  • Seven solar-powered eco-bungalows for an overnight stay

How a Visit Works

Chumbe is reached by a short boat transfer from near Stone Town. Visitor numbers are deliberately limited to protect the reef, so day trips and overnight stays must be booked ahead. A day trip includes guided snorkelling and a forest walk; overnight guests stay in solar-powered eco-bungalows. It is an easy, low-impact add-on to a Stone Town or west-coast stay.

The healthiest coral we saw anywhere on Zanzibar, a forest full of giant crabs, and the knowledge that our visit funds its protection. Chumbe shows how it should be done. — Guest review, TripAdvisor

Chumbe Island FAQs

What makes Chumbe Island special?
+
It is one of the world's first privately managed marine parks, protecting a pristine coral reef and rare forest for decades. Its reef is among the healthiest in the region, and tourism directly funds conservation and education.
Can I visit Chumbe on a day trip?
+
Yes — day trips from near Stone Town include guided snorkelling and a forest walk. Numbers are limited to protect the reef, so booking ahead is essential. You can also stay overnight in an eco-bungalow.
Is the snorkelling good?
+
Excellent — the protected coral garden along the western shore is exceptionally healthy, with a guided snorkelling trail over brilliant coral and more than 400 species of fish, plus frequent turtles.
What is there to see on land?
+
A rare coral-rag forest with nature trails, home to the giant coconut crab and roosting flying foxes, alongside the island's historic lighthouse and conservation centre.
When is the best time to visit?
+
June to October and December to February for the calmest seas and clearest water. The long rains in April and May reduce visibility and access.
