Extraordinary African Safaris
A characterful highland town on a rocky plateau — the gateway to Ruaha National Park, with cool air, colonial history, and the ancient Isimila stone-age site.
Iringa stands on a rocky plateau at around 1,600 metres in Tanzania’s Southern Highlands, a cool, breezy town with a distinct character all its own. Its hilltop setting, colonial-era buildings, and lively market give it an appealing, slightly old-fashioned charm, and the altitude makes it a refreshing change from the lowland heat.
For travellers it is the gateway to Ruaha National Park, Tanzania’s largest, which lies to the west — most southern safaris to Ruaha route through or over Iringa. The town has good lodges and a strong sense of place, with a history that takes in the Hehe people’s 19th-century resistance to German colonisation under Chief Mkwawa, whose story is told at the nearby Kalenga museum.
Just outside town lies the Isimila Stone Age site, where Acheulean tools hundreds of thousands of years old were found among dramatic eroded sandstone pillars. Iringa suits travellers combining a Ruaha safari with history, cool highland air, and a genuine taste of southern Tanzanian town life.
Iringa sits on the surfaced highway about seven to eight hours from Dar es Salaam, or a short flight to nearby airstrips, and is the staging point for road journeys into Ruaha. The town has comfortable lodges. Most travellers overnight here on the way to or from Ruaha, adding a visit to the Isimila site or Kalenga museum. Its altitude keeps it cool year-round.
A cool, breezy town with real history, the extraordinary Isimila pillars on its doorstep, and the gateway to Ruaha — Iringa was far more than a stopover. — Guest review, TripAdvisor
Cool, clear weather and the peak window for onward Ruaha safaris. The most popular and reliable time.
Best overallWarm and mostly dry between the rains, good for sightseeing and travel. A pleasant second window.
Best second windowBrief showers green the highlands; good value and quiet. Travel remains easy.
Best for valueThe wettest stretch, lush and quiet, with some Ruaha camps closing. Roads can slow.
