Jambiani

A long, peaceful fishing village south of Paje — turquoise shallows, an authentic Swahili pace, and some of the warmest welcomes on Zanzibar.

Why Jambiani Is the Authentic East Coast

Jambiani runs for several kilometres along Zanzibar’s south-east coast, just south of Paje, and it keeps the working soul of a Swahili fishing village more than almost anywhere else on the island. Brightly painted dhows rest on dazzling sand, fishermen head out at dawn, and women tend seaweed farms in the shallows at low tide.

The beach itself is classic east coast — broad white sand and luminous turquoise water over a reef-protected lagoon, with the same big tidal swing as Paje. Accommodation is mostly small, locally rooted guesthouses and boutique hotels, and the atmosphere is gentle and unhurried, with real day-to-day village life woven through it.

Jambiani suits travellers who want beauty with authenticity and a slower pace, often combined with livelier Paje just up the coast for a touch more activity. It is around an hour from Stone Town and the airport.

What to See & Do

  • A genuine Swahili fishing village with everyday local life on show
  • Long white-sand beach and a turquoise, reef-protected lagoon
  • Seaweed farms and dhows that define the south-east coast
  • Small, locally rooted guesthouses and a warm, gentle welcome
  • Easy reach of Paje’s kite scene and the Jozani forest

How a Visit Works

Jambiani is about an hour by road from Stone Town and the airport, just south of Paje. Accommodation leans towards intimate, locally owned guesthouses and boutique hotels. As elsewhere on the east coast, swimming is best around high tide. Most travellers stay three to five nights, often as a beach extension to a safari.

The most authentic beach we found on Zanzibar — fishermen, seaweed farmers, painted dhows, and a welcome so warm we extended twice. — Guest review, TripAdvisor

Jambiani FAQs

How is Jambiani different from Paje?
+
Jambiani is quieter and more village-rooted, with everyday Swahili fishing life on show, while Paje just to the north is busier and centred on kitesurfing. The two pair well for variety.
Can you swim at Jambiani?
+
Yes, best around high tide when the lagoon fills with turquoise water. At low tide the sea retreats across walkable flats — the natural rhythm of the east coast.
Is Jambiani good for an authentic experience?
+
Among the best on Zanzibar — much of the accommodation is small and locally owned, and daily village life of fishing and seaweed farming carries on around you.
What is there to do near Jambiani?
+
Snorkelling trips, the Jozani forest and its red colobus monkeys, kitesurfing in neighbouring Paje, sandbank picnics, and simply walking the long beach at low tide.
When is the best time to visit?
+
June to October and December to February for the driest weather and best water. The long rains in April and May are the wettest months.
