Why Kiwengwa Is the East Coast Resort Strip

Kiwengwa spreads along Zanzibar’s central-east coast as a wide, brilliant-white beach backed by low cliffs and palms. It is one of the island’s main resort areas, with a good number of larger hotels and all-inclusive properties — a comfortable, easy choice for travellers who want facilities, watersports, and space to spread out.

The beach is long and beautiful, with the classic east-coast pattern of turquoise shallows at high tide and far-retreating sandbars at low. Between the bigger resorts there are quieter pockets and a working fishing village, so the area mixes resort comfort with glimpses of local life.

Kiwengwa suits families and travellers who like the reassurance of resort amenities and an all-inclusive option, while still enjoying a genuine Indian Ocean beach. It is around an hour from Stone Town and the airport, an easy beach base to pair with a mainland safari.

What to See & Do

  • A long, wide beach of brilliant white sand on the east coast
  • Plenty of resorts and all-inclusive options for easy comfort
  • Calm turquoise shallows at high tide, ideal for families
  • Watersports, dhow trips, and snorkelling excursions
  • Quieter stretches and a fishing village between the resorts

How a Visit Works

Kiwengwa is about an hour by road from Stone Town and the airport. It has the island’s widest choice of larger and all-inclusive resorts, alongside smaller hotels. As with the rest of the east coast, swimming is best around high tide. Most travellers stay three to five nights, often as a relaxed beach finish to a safari.

A huge, gorgeous beach and an easy all-inclusive base for the family — calm shallows for the kids and plenty to do. Exactly the relaxed finish we needed after safari. — Guest review, TripAdvisor

Kiwengwa FAQs

Is Kiwengwa good for families?
+
Yes — its wide beach, calm high-tide shallows, and choice of larger resorts and all-inclusive hotels make it one of the easiest, most comfortable family beaches on Zanzibar.
Are there all-inclusive resorts at Kiwengwa?
+
Kiwengwa has the island's widest selection of larger and all-inclusive resorts, alongside smaller hotels, so it suits travellers who want facilities and an easy package.
Can you swim at Kiwengwa?

Best around high tide, when the lagoon is a turquoise pool. At low tide the sea retreats across sandbars, the natural rhythm of the east coast; many resorts have pools.
What is there to do at Kiwengwa?
+
Watersports, snorkelling and dhow trips, visits to the Mnemba reef and Jozani forest, and Stone Town day trips, plus plenty of beach to simply relax on.
When is the best time to visit?
+
June to October and December to February for the best weather and water. The long rains of April and May are the wettest months.
