Why Magoroto Is the East Usambara Retreat

Magoroto Forest Estate is a private nature retreat tucked into the foothills of the East Usambara Mountains, inland from Tanga. A working estate that blends conservation, agroforestry, and low-key tourism, it wraps patches of rainforest around a pretty crater lake, creating a peaceful green haven that few travellers know about.

The setting is the draw. Forest trails climb through rich vegetation alive with birds, butterflies, and the calls of colobus and other monkeys, while the lake at the heart of the estate invites canoeing, swimming, and quiet evenings. Viewpoints look out over the surrounding hills towards the coast, and the air is cool and clean.

Magoroto is a place to slow down — to walk, paddle, birdwatch, and relax in simple eco-lodging or a campsite. It suits travellers wanting a restful forest interlude, easily combined with the Amani reserve, the wider Usambaras, and the Tanga coast for a north-eastern green escape.

What to See & Do

  • A private rainforest estate around a tranquil crater lake
  • Forest trails with birds, butterflies, and monkeys
  • Canoeing and swimming on the estate lake
  • Viewpoints over the East Usambara foothills towards the coast
  • Restful eco-lodging and camping far off the trail

How a Visit Works

Magoroto Forest Estate is reached by road inland from Tanga and Muheza, the final stretch climbing into the East Usambara foothills on rough track. Accommodation is simple eco-lodging or camping on the estate. Activities centre on forest walks, lake canoeing, birding, and relaxing. Most travellers stay one to two nights as a restful add-on to the Usambaras, Amani, or the Tanga coast.

A crater lake ringed by forest, monkeys in the trees, a canoe to ourselves, and total peace. Magoroto was the restful surprise of our north-eastern trip. — Guest review, TripAdvisor
