Extraordinary African Safaris
An arid wilderness of red earth and acacia beneath the Pare and Usambara mountains — home to a guarded black rhino sanctuary and one of Africa's most important wild dog programmes.
Mkomazi sits in Tanzania’s far north-east, a 3,245-square-kilometre belt of semi-arid savanna running along the Kenyan border where it shares an ecosystem with Kenya’s vast Tsavo. The land is dry-country Africa at its starkest — red soils, baobabs, and umbrella acacia framed by the Pare and Usambara mountains.
For decades Mkomazi was a game reserve under pressure; today it is a conservation success story. It holds a fenced black rhino sanctuary, part of a careful reintroduction programme, and a breeding centre for the endangered African wild dog. Both are among the reasons the park matters far beyond its visitor numbers.
This is not a Serengeti substitute, and that is the point. Mkomazi rewards travellers who want space, dry-country specials, and a sense of frontier — usually with no other vehicle in sight. It pairs naturally with a Kilimanjaro climb or a Moshi base, an easy add-on that almost no one makes.
Access is easy by Tanzanian standards: the Zange main gate is about an hour from Same on the Moshi–Dar highway, roughly a 2–3 hour drive from Moshi. Most visits are day trips or short stays built onto a Kilimanjaro or Northern Circuit holiday. Rhino sanctuary visits are arranged in advance through the park authority.
A whole afternoon of game viewing and we never saw another car. Lesser kudu, gerenuk, elephant — and the rhino sanctuary was the highlight of our trip. — Guest review, TripAdvisor
Sparse vegetation and animals drawn to water make this the prime window. Clear, mild days and the best chance of dry-country specials.
Best overallBrief storms freshen the bush and bring migrant birds. Green scenery and quiet roads.
Best for birdingWarm and lush between the rains, with newborn antelope. Wildlife is more dispersed but the scenery is at its best.
Best sceneryHeavy rain can make tracks difficult and viewing harder. The quietest, greenest time of year.
