Why Morogoro Is the Southern Circuit Gateway

Morogoro lies about three hours west of Dar es Salaam at the foot of the steep, green Uluguru Mountains, part of the ancient Eastern Arc chain. A prosperous agricultural town surrounded by sisal, sugar, and fruit farms, it is sometimes called ‘Mji kasoro bahari’ — the town that lacks only a sea — for having everything else a place could want.

For travellers it is the natural gateway to the Southern Circuit. Mikumi National Park is a short drive west, and Udzungwa lies beyond, making Morogoro a logical first stop on a southern safari. The town itself is pleasant and lively, with a busy market and a relaxed pace.

The Uluguru Mountains rising behind it are the real draw for those who linger. Day hikes climb through farming villages of the Luguru people to waterfalls, viewpoints, and cool forest, with rich birdlife and endemic plants along the way. Morogoro suits travellers combining a southern safari with a taste of mountain culture and walking.
