Moshi

The relaxed town at the foot of Kilimanjaro — the launch point for climbs, a coffee capital, and a gateway to waterfalls and hot springs.

Why Moshi Is Kilimanjaro’s Home Town

Moshi sits at the southern foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, and on a clear morning the snow-capped summit floats above the town in a way that never quite seems real. It is the natural base for Kilimanjaro climbs — smaller, calmer, and more walkable than Arusha — and a pleasant place to acclimatise before or recover after the mountain.

This is also Tanzania’s coffee heartland. The fertile volcanic slopes of Kilimanjaro grow some of the country’s finest arabica, and coffee tours with the Chagga farming communities are a Moshi highlight. The town itself has a laid-back, tree-lined charm, with cafes, markets, and an easy pace that invites lingering.

Beyond Moshi lie some of the region’s best day trips: the Materuni Waterfalls, the turquoise Chemka (Kikuletwa) hot springs, and the cultural villages of the Chagga people on the lower slopes. Moshi is reached via Kilimanjaro International Airport, about 45 minutes away, and pairs a climb naturally with a safari or Zanzibar finish.

  • A relaxed, walkable town ideal for acclimatising and recovering

How a Visit Works

Moshi is reached via Kilimanjaro International Airport, about 45 minutes away, or an hour or so by road from Arusha. Climbers typically spend a night here before and after a Kilimanjaro trek. Day trips to waterfalls, hot springs, and coffee farms fill any extra time. The town works well as a base for the mountain and a relaxed start or finish to a longer trip.

Waking up to Kilimanjaro above the rooftops, a coffee tour with a Chagga family, and a swim at the Chemka springs — Moshi was the perfect calm before and after the climb. — Guest review, TripAdvisor

Moshi FAQs

Is Moshi or Arusha better for climbing Kilimanjaro?

Moshi is closer to the mountain and quieter, making it the classic climbing base, while Arusha is the wider safari hub. Many climbers stay in Moshi and add a safari from Arusha.
What is there to do in Moshi besides climbing?
+
Coffee tours with Chagga farmers, day trips to the Materuni Waterfalls and Chemka hot springs, the local markets, and simply enjoying the relaxed, tree-lined town with Kilimanjaro overhead.
How do I get to Moshi?
+
Via Kilimanjaro International Airport, about 45 minutes away, or roughly an hour by road from Arusha. We arrange private transfers.
When is the best time to visit Moshi?
+
June to October and January to March are the main Kilimanjaro climbing windows with the clearest weather. April and May bring the long rains.
Can I combine Moshi with a safari and Zanzibar?
