Extraordinary African Safaris
Tanzania's second city on the shore of Lake Victoria — a vibrant lakeside hub of giant granite boulders, and the western gateway to the Serengeti.
Mwanza is Tanzania’s second-largest city, spread across hills and bays on the southern shore of Lake Victoria. Nicknamed ‘Rock City’ for the enormous balancing granite boulders that tumble through and around it — Bismarck Rock at the harbour is the best known — it is a lively, fast-growing lakeside port with a character quite unlike the safari north.
For travellers it is most useful as the western gateway to the Serengeti. The park’s Western Corridor and Ndabaka gate are within reach by road, and Mwanza’s airport connects the region, so it serves well as an arrival or departure point for a Serengeti safari that runs west rather than back to Arusha — particularly handy in migration season.
The city itself rewards a little time: the rock-strewn lakeshore, Saanane Island National Park just offshore, boat trips on Lake Victoria, and a busy market and food scene. Mwanza suits travellers exploring the Lake Victoria zone, combining a Serengeti safari with Rubondo Island, or simply experiencing a different, less-touristed side of Tanzania.
Mwanza is reached by scheduled flights from Dar es Salaam, Arusha, and beyond, and is connected by road to the Serengeti’s western gates. Most travellers pass through as a Serengeti arrival or departure point, especially on western or migration-focused itineraries. A day allows for Bismarck Rock, Saanane Island, and a lake boat trip. The dry season is best for travel and Serengeti access.
We exited the Serengeti through the Western Corridor straight to Mwanza, climbed among giant boulders at sunset, and took a boat on Lake Victoria. A brilliant alternative end to a safari. — Guest review, TripAdvisor
Reliable travel and the peak season for the western Serengeti, with the migration often in the corridor mid-year. The best window.
Best overallWarm and bright between the rains, good for city visits and lake trips. A pleasant second window.
Best second windowBrief storms freshen the lakeside; travel remains easy. Quieter and good value.
Best for valueThe wettest stretch, lush and humid, with the lowest rates. Showers are usually short.
