Nungwi

Zanzibar's liveliest beach village at the island's northern tip — powder sand, swimmable water at all tides, and the archipelago's best sunsets.

Why Nungwi Is Zanzibar’s Beach Capital

Nungwi sits at the very northern tip of Unguja, and it is the busiest and best-known beach on Zanzibar for good reason. Unlike the east coast, the geography here means the sea stays deep and swimmable through the tides, so the wide band of white sand fronts turquoise water you can actually get into at any hour.

It began as a fishing and dhow-building village and still has that working heart, but it has grown into Zanzibar’s liveliest beach hub — a string of hotels, beach bars, dive centres, and seafood restaurants along the shore. Days are for diving, snorkelling trips to Mnemba, dhow cruises, and the famous Nungwi sunsets; evenings have the most energy on the island.

Nungwi suits travellers who want a beach with life around it rather than total seclusion, and it pairs easily with quieter Kendwa next door. It is about an hour by road from Stone Town and the airport, making it a straightforward beach finish to any safari.

What to See & Do

  • Tide-free swimming — deep, clear water at all hours, rare on Zanzibar
  • The island’s most celebrated sunsets over the Indian Ocean
  • Diving and snorkelling, including day trips to nearby Mnemba Atoll
  • Lively beach bars, seafood grills, and dhow-building tradition
  • An easy pairing with quieter Kendwa beach just along the coast

How a Visit Works

Nungwi is about an hour’s drive from Stone Town and the airport on a good road. The beach is lined with accommodation from lively mid-range hotels to quiet boutique retreats. Most travellers stay three to five nights, often as a beach extension to a mainland safari. Diving and snorkelling are arranged through the village’s dive centres.

Swimmable water no matter the tide, a sunset every evening that stopped us in our tracks, and the best seafood of the trip. Nungwi delivered exactly the beach we wanted. — Guest review, TripAdvisor

Nungwi FAQs

Can you swim at Nungwi at all tides?
+
Yes — this is Nungwi's big advantage over the east coast. The northern geography keeps the water deep and swimmable throughout the tidal cycle, so you are never left with a long walk to the sea.
Is Nungwi too busy?
+
Nungwi is the liveliest beach on Zanzibar, with bars, restaurants, and dive centres. If you want more quiet, neighbouring Kendwa offers the same swimmable water with a calmer feel; many travellers combine the two.
How far is Nungwi from the airport?
+
About an hour by road from Zanzibar's airport and Stone Town, on a good surfaced route. We arrange private transfers.
What is there to do besides the beach?
+
Diving and snorkelling, day trips to Mnemba Atoll, sunset dhow cruises, a turtle conservation aquarium, and Stone Town day trips. The sunsets alone are a nightly event.
When is the best time to visit Nungwi?
+
June to October and December to February for the calmest seas, clearest water, and best diving. The long rains in April and May are best avoided.
