Pangani is a small, sleepy town on the northern coast where the Pangani River empties into the Indian Ocean, about an hour south of Tanga. Once a significant Swahili and Arab trading port — a terminus of old caravan routes and, less happily, the slave and ivory trade — it has slipped into a gentle decline that has left it quietly atmospheric, with weathered colonial buildings, carved doors, and an unhurried air.
The appeal is the blend of history, river, and empty coast. Long, near-deserted beaches stretch north and south of the town, fringed by palms and backed by a scattering of low-key beach lodges. Offshore reefs and the marine life around Maziwe Island offer snorkelling and diving, while river trips upstream pass mangroves, villages, and birdlife.
Pangani suits travellers seeking a quiet, authentic stretch of coast with a sense of history and few other visitors. It pairs naturally with Tanga and the Usambaras for a north-eastern coast-and-highlands trip well off the standard tourist map.
Pangani is reached by road about an hour south of Tanga, or from Dar es Salaam up the coast. Accommodation is mostly low-key beach lodges north and south of the town. Activities include beach time, snorkelling and diving (including Maziwe Island), river and dhow trips, and a heritage walk through the old town. Most travellers stay two to four nights. The drier months are most comfortable.
