Tarangire National Park

Herds of 300 elephants beneath ancient baobabs, and a dry-season river that pulls in wildlife from across the Maasai steppe — northern Tanzania's most underrated park.

Why Tarangire Is the Land of Giants

Two giants define Tarangire: elephants and baobabs. The park holds one of Africa’s densest elephant populations — herds of two and three hundred are a regular dry-season sight — moving among baobab trees that have stood for over a thousand years.

The park’s engine is the Tarangire River. From June to October it is the only reliable water on this stretch of the Maasai steppe, drawing elephant, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, and the predators that follow them into a concentrated wildlife corridor along its banks.

Just two hours’ drive from Arusha (about 120 km), Tarangire is the natural first stop on a Northern Circuit safari — yet most itineraries give it a single rushed game drive. Stay a night or two and you get big-game viewing to rival anywhere, with a fraction of the vehicles.

Wildlife Highlights

  • Elephant herds numbering in the hundreds along the Tarangire River (Jun–Oct)
  • Ancient baobab trees — some over 1,000 years old — defining Africa’s most photogenic backdrop
  • Lion, leopard, and cheetah; tree-climbing lions are seen here too
  • Dry-country specials: fringe-eared oryx, gerenuk, and lesser kudu
  • 550+ bird species — the highest breeding-bird count of any Tanzanian park

Areas of the Park

River circuit (north): the classic game-drive country, busiest near the gate, spectacular in dry season. Silale Swamp (east): a permanent green magnet for elephants and big pythons. Kitibong & the south: remote, lightly visited woodland for full-day explorations. Bordering conservancies: night drives and walking safaris that aren’t permitted inside the park itself.

“We counted over 200 elephants at the river in a single afternoon. Our guide just switched off the engine and we listened.” — Guest review, Google

Tarangire National Park FAQs

Is Tarangire worth more than a day trip?
+
Strongly yes in dry season. Day-trippers see the busy river circuit at midday; overnight guests get the dawn hours when elephant activity peaks and the light is extraordinary.
When are the big elephant herds there?
+
June to October, when the Tarangire River is the only water for miles. In the rains the herds disperse onto the steppe, though many elephants remain year-round.
How does Tarangire compare to the Serengeti?
+
Different stages: the Serengeti is open plains and migration drama; Tarangire is intimate river-and-baobab country with the better elephant viewing. The strongest itineraries include both.
Can I do a walking safari here?
+
Not inside the park, but excellent guided walks and night drives run in the wildlife management areas on its border — easily added to your itinerary.
Are tsetse flies a problem?
+
They exist in the woodland areas, as in most wild parks. Wearing neutral colours (avoid blue and black), using repellent, and keeping windows managed in known pockets keeps them a minor nuisance at most.
