Udzungwa Mountains National Park

A walking park, not a driving one — ancient rainforest, thundering waterfalls and endemic primates found nowhere else on Earth.

Why Udzungwa Is Tanzania’s Rainforest Park

Udzungwa is unlike any other Tanzanian park: there are no game-drive roads. This is a trekking park, a 1,990-square-kilometre wall of rainforest rising from the plains as part of the Eastern Arc Mountains — an ancient chain so biologically rich it is often called the Galápagos of Africa.

The forest is the attraction. Trails climb through dense canopy to the Sanje Waterfall, which drops some 170 metres in three stages with a pool at its foot you can swim in. Higher routes lead deep into mist forest over several days. Along the way you may meet primates found nowhere else on the planet — the Udzungwa red colobus and the Sanje crested mangabey, both first described to science here.

Udzungwa rewards travellers who like to walk and care about biodiversity over big-game checklists. It sits a short drive from Mikumi, which makes a natural pairing: a classic floodplain safari followed by a forest trek and a waterfall swim.

Trail & Wildlife Highlights

  • Sanje Waterfall — a 170m three-tier cascade with a swimmable plunge pool
  • Endemic primates: the Udzungwa red colobus and Sanje crested mangabey
  • Half-day to multi-day forest treks, including the Mwanihana peak route
  • Exceptional Eastern Arc biodiversity — rare frogs, birds, and plants
  • Dense rainforest scenery, a rare habitat on the safari map

How a Visit Works

Udzungwa is reached by road, usually combined with Mikumi just to the north or as part of a Southern Circuit drive. All exploration is on foot with a park guide: the popular Sanje Waterfall hike takes about four to six hours, while longer routes to Mwanihana Peak run two to three days with camping. Reasonable fitness and sturdy footwear are essential.

Udzungwa Mountains National Park FAQs

Can I do a game drive in Udzungwa?
+
No — Udzungwa has no game-drive roads. It is a trekking park explored entirely on foot with a guide. For classic game drives, pair it with neighbouring Mikumi.
How hard is the Sanje Waterfall hike?
+
It is a moderate four-to-six-hour round trip with a steady climb through forest. Reasonable fitness and good footwear are needed; the reward is a swim in the waterfall's pool.
What primates will I see?
+
Udzungwa protects two primates found nowhere else on Earth — the Udzungwa red colobus and the Sanje crested mangabey — alongside other monkeys and a wealth of forest birds.
How do I combine Udzungwa with a safari?
+
It pairs perfectly with Mikumi just to the north, and slots neatly into a Southern Circuit route continuing to Ruaha or Nyerere. We build the logistics around your fitness and time.
When is the best time to trek Udzungwa?
+
June to October, when trails are drier and firmer. The wetter months make the forest greener and the waterfalls fuller, but paths become slippery.
