Why the Usambaras Are Tanzania’s Hiking Highlands

The Usambara Mountains rise in north-eastern Tanzania as part of the ancient Eastern Arc chain, a cool, green world of forested ridges and intensely cultivated hillsides centred on the old colonial hill station of Lushoto. After the heat of the lowlands and the dust of safari, their misty, temperate climate and patchwork of farms come as a refreshing surprise.

These are among the oldest mountains in Africa, and their long isolation has made them a biodiversity hotspot, with rare plants, birds, and the famous African violet first found here. But for most visitors the appeal is walking: a network of trails links villages, viewpoints, waterfalls, and forest, including the celebrated Irente Viewpoint, where the land drops away in a sheer wall to the Maasai plains far below.

The Usambaras suit active travellers who want to slow down, hike from village to village, and meet the Sambaa farming communities. Reached from Lushoto, a few hours inland from the coast, they make a cool, scenic contrast within a wider northern or coastal Tanzania trip.

What to See & Do

  • Cool, green Eastern Arc highlands around historic Lushoto
  • Excellent village-to-village hiking and forest trails
  • The Irente Viewpoint, with sheer views over the Maasai plains
  • A biodiversity hotspot of rare plants and birds
  • Warm Sambaa farming communities and homestays

How a Visit Works

The Usambaras are reached via Lushoto, a few hours’ drive inland from the Tanga coast or off the main Arusha–Dar highway. Guided hikes range from half-day walks to multi-day village-to-village treks with homestays, arranged through local cultural-tourism programmes. The cool climate means warm layers are useful. Most travellers stay two to four nights, hiking and exploring at a relaxed pace.

Days of hiking ridge to ridge through farms and forest, nights in friendly villages, and that staggering view at Irente — the Usambaras were the green, cool heart of our Tanzania trip. — Guest review, TripAdvisor
