Extraordinary African Safaris
Trek the lush Udzungwa rainforest — the 'African Galápagos' — to towering waterfalls and rare endemic primates in southern Tanzania.
The Udzungwa Mountains, part of the ancient Eastern Arc range, hold one of Africa’s most biodiverse rainforests — so rich in endemic species it’s been called the ‘African Galápagos’. Unlike the savannah parks, Udzungwa is explored entirely on foot, through dense forest alive with rare primates, birds, and butterflies.
The classic day hike climbs to the spectacular Sanje Waterfalls, which plunge 170 metres in three tiers with a swimming pool at the base; multi-day treks venture deeper to the high plateau and remote camps. It’s a paradise for hikers, birders, and nature-lovers seeking something far off the safari trail.
Meet your guide and ranger at the park edge.
Climb through dense forest spotting primates and birds.
Reach the three-tiered falls; swim at the base.
Longer treks venture to the high plateau and remote camps.
A wonderful change of pace for hikers and nature-lovers, and genuinely special for biodiversity — but it's a trekking destination, not a Big Five park, so come for forest, waterfalls, and rare species, not lions. It pairs well with the southern circuit (Ruaha, Nyerere/Mikumi). Trails can be steep and humid.

These are the destinations we most often pair with Udzungwa Mountains Trek, based on route flow, season, and how the wider itinerary fits together.
