Ndutu Migration Safari

Where the migration begins each year — the Ndutu plains on the Serengeti–Ngorongoro border, calving ground and big-cat theatre.

Experience Guide

Ndutu sits on the boundary between the southern Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where the short-grass plains and seasonal lakes draw the migration each December to March. Because it lies within the conservation area rather than the national park, off-road driving is permitted here — a real advantage for getting close to the action and for photography.

It’s the calving heartland, with newborn herds and the predators that follow, set against acacia woodland and soda lakes alive with flamingos. Quieter and more flexible than the park itself, Ndutu is a favourite of returning safari-goers and photographers.

How It Unfolds

AM
Onto the short grass

Off-road access lets you position close to the herds.

Action
Cats on the plains

Lion and cheetah hunt the vulnerable calves in the open.

Midday
Lakes & woodland

Flamingos on the lakes; leopards in the acacia groves.

PM
Soft-light plains

Big skies and the day's best photographic light.

Is It Worth It?

Ndutu's off-road permission is its trump card — you can get into better positions than the national park allows, which matters enormously for photographers. It shares the calving season's strengths and the same caveat: travel December to March, and remember conservation-area fees apply rather than park fees.

Good to Know

  • Off-road driving allowed (conservation area)
  • Best December–March for calving
  • Conservation fees, not park fees

Before You Book

Why is Ndutu special?
+
It sits in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, so off-road driving is permitted — getting you closer to calving herds and predators than the national park allows.
When should I visit Ndutu?
+
December to March, when the migration gathers on the short-grass plains to calve, bringing intense predator activity.
Is it the same as the southern Serengeti?
+
Closely linked — Ndutu is the conservation-area side of the same calving plains, with the bonus of off-road access.
Are there extra fees?
+
Ndutu uses Ngorongoro Conservation Area fees rather than Serengeti park fees; we include these in your quote.
