The Usambara Mountains, rising in northeast Tanzania around the old colonial hill town of Lushoto, are a cool, green, and gentle hiking destination — a world away from the heat of the plains. Ancient Eastern Arc forest, terraced farmland, and friendly villages make for some of the country’s most relaxed and accessible trekking.
Trails link villages and viewpoints, the most famous being Irente, where the highlands drop away to the Maasai plains 1,000 metres below. Community tourism is well established, so guides, guesthouses, and homestays are easy to arrange — ideal for a few unhurried, scenic days.
