Nyerere National Park Safari

Tanzania's largest park (the former Selous) — boat safaris on the Rufiji, walking among big game, and wild dogs, a short flight from Dar or Zanzibar.

Experience Guide

Carved from the legendary Selous Game Reserve in 2019, Nyerere is the largest national park in Tanzania — roughly 30,000 km² of wilderness centred on the mighty Rufiji River, yet visited by a fraction of the Serengeti’s crowds. It’s the heart of the southern circuit and a completely different safari.

The Rufiji enables what the northern parks can’t: boat safaris drifting past hippo, crocodiles, and elephants at the waterline. Add genuine walking safaris and one of Africa’s most important wild-dog populations, and you have a wild, exclusive park reached by a 45-minute flight from Dar or Zanzibar.

How It Unfolds

Fly
To the park

A 45-minute flight from Dar or Zanzibar to the airstrip.

Drive
Game drives

Big game across miombo woodland and along the lakes.

Boat
On the Rufiji

Drift past hippo, crocs, and drinking elephants.

Walk
On foot

Track big game with an armed ranger.

Is It Worth It?

Our top southern-circuit pick for variety — boating, walking, and driving in one stay, with far fewer vehicles than the north. The trade-off is no migration mega-herds and a rainy-season closure (many camps shut March–May). For a wilder, more exclusive Tanzania, it's superb, especially paired with Zanzibar.

Good to Know

  • Fly-in (45 min from Dar/Zanzibar)
  • Boating and walking, not just drives
  • Many camps close in the long rains
  • Pairs perfectly with a Zanzibar beach

Before You Book

Is it Selous or Nyerere?
+
Both — in 2019 the photographic northern sector of the old Selous Game Reserve became Nyerere National Park; the names are used interchangeably.
What makes it different from the Serengeti?
+
Boat safaris, walking, far fewer vehicles, and a great river at its heart — but no migration mega-herds. Many seasoned travellers prefer the south.
How do I get there?
+
A 45-minute light-aircraft flight from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar, which is why it pairs so well with a beach holiday.
When should I go?
+
June to October is prime; many camps close during the long rains (March–May).
