Big Five Safari

Lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino — a route built specifically to give you the strongest realistic chance of all five iconic species.

Experience Guide

The ‘Big Five’ — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino — were named by old hunters as the hardest animals to take on foot. Today the only thing you’ll shoot is a camera, but the term still marks a complete safari. Tanzania is one of the best countries in Africa to see all five.

The catch is the rhino. Tanzania’s most reliable black rhino sightings are on the Ngorongoro Crater floor, so any genuine Big Five itinerary must include a crater morning. We pair that with the Serengeti for cats and Tarangire for its huge elephant herds.

How It Unfolds

Day 1–2
Serengeti

Big cats and buffalo on the plains; leopard along the rivers.

Day 3
Ngorongoro Crater

Descend at dawn for the best rhino chance on the crater floor.

Day 4
Tarangire

Vast elephant herds among the baobabs complete the five.

Is It Worth It?

Four of the five are straightforward in Tanzania; rhino is the variable. If seeing a rhino matters to you, tell us up front — we'll guarantee a full crater morning and, for the keenest, suggest adding time to improve the odds. Anyone promising a 100% rhino sighting is overselling.

Good to Know

  • Rhino sightings are realistic only in Ngorongoro
  • Bring binoculars — leopards are often distant
  • Early starts dramatically improve big-cat sightings
  • A 4+ day trip gives the best five-species odds

Before You Book

Can you guarantee all Big Five?
+
No reputable operator can. Four are highly likely; rhino depends on a crater sighting. We design the route to maximise your chances and are honest about the odds.
Where will I see rhino?
+
Almost always on the Ngorongoro Crater floor, where a small protected population grazes the open grassland — best spotted at first light with binoculars.
How is this different from a classic safari?
+
Same parks, but the itinerary is sequenced specifically to tick off all five species, always including a dedicated crater morning.
Is it suitable for children?
+
Yes, from about age 6. The crater day involves a longer drive, so we plan rests around it for families.
