Extraordinary African Safaris
The ultimate Kilimanjaro experience — camp inside the summit crater beside the glaciers and ash pit, for elite, well-acclimatised climbers.
For the most committed climbers, Crater Camp is Kilimanjaro’s pinnacle: instead of descending straight after summiting, you camp at around 5,700 metres inside the summit crater itself, beside the Furtwängler Glacier and the inner ash pit. It’s a rare privilege few climbers ever experience — and a serious undertaking.
Sleeping at that altitude demands excellent acclimatisation, so Crater Camp is built onto a longer route (usually Lemosho or the Northern Circuit) with extra days, and reserved for strong, experienced, well-prepared climbers. The reward is sunrise on the roof of Africa with the glaciers at your tent door.
Climb a long route (Lemosho/Northern Circuit) for acclimatisation.
Reach Uhuru Peak, then descend into the crater to camp.
Camp beside the glacier and ash pit (weather permitting).
A long descent off the mountain the next day.
This is a specialist objective, not a standard climb — sleeping at 5,700 m is physiologically demanding and only safe with excellent acclimatisation, a longer route, and supplemental oxygen on hand. We book it only for strong, experienced climbers. For most, summiting and descending the same day is the right and safer choice.

These are the destinations we most often pair with Crater Camp Trek, based on route flow, season, and how the wider itinerary fits together.
