Extraordinary African Safaris
The scenic 'Whiskey route' — Kilimanjaro's most popular climb, with varied terrain, the Barranco Wall, and a strong acclimatisation profile.
Machame is the most popular route up Kilimanjaro for good reason: it’s the most scenically varied, traversing rainforest, the dramatic Shira Plateau, the Barranco Wall, and the high alpine desert, and its ‘climb high, sleep low’ profile gives strong acclimatisation. It’s camping-only, approaching from the south and descending via Mweka.
Nicknamed the ‘Whiskey route’ (a tougher counterpart to Marangu’s ‘Coca-Cola’), it’s more demanding than Marangu but rewards with better views and higher success rates — especially on the 7-day version, which we recommend over the 6-day.
Rainforest to Machame Camp, then up to the Shira Plateau.
Climb high to 4,600 m, sleep low below the Barranco Wall.
Scramble the wall; traverse to Barafu base camp.
Midnight start to 5,895 m, then descend via Mweka.
Our most-recommended route for first-timers wanting the best balance of scenery, acclimatisation, and value. It's busier than the quieter routes, especially mid-year, but the 'climb high, sleep low' days genuinely help. Take 7 days, not 6 — the extra day noticeably lifts summit success.

These are the destinations we most often pair with Machame Route Trek, based on route flow, season, and how the wider itinerary fits together.
