Extraordinary African Safaris
Summit East Africa's only active volcano overnight — a steep, demanding climb to a crater-rim sunrise over the Rift Valley.
Ol Doinyo Lengai — ‘Mountain of God’ to the Maasai — rises 2,962 metres above the Rift Valley near Lake Natron, and it is East Africa’s only active volcano, erupting a rare, cool carbonatite lava found nowhere else on Earth. Climbing it is one of Tanzania’s most demanding and rewarding adventures.
The climb starts around midnight to avoid the heat and reach the summit for sunrise. It’s relentlessly steep — roughly 1,600 metres of ascent on loose volcanic slopes — but the reward is standing on the crater rim at dawn, looking down into a steaming volcanic landscape and out across the Rift Valley to Lake Natron far below.
Set off in the cool of night to beat the heat.
Roughly 1,600 m up loose volcanic slopes — slow and steady.
Reach the summit for sunrise over a steaming crater.
Carefully back down before the day heats up.
This is genuinely hard — among the steepest climbs in the region, on unstable ground, done overnight. You need solid fitness and a head for steep terrain; it is not a casual hike. For experienced, fit adventurers it's unforgettable. Anyone unsure should treat the Natron gorge walks as the better option.
