Extraordinary African Safaris
A blood-red soda lake beneath an active volcano — flamingo breeding grounds, waterfall gorges, and the rawest landscape on the Northern Circuit.
At the foot of Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Maasai ‘Mountain of God’, lies a shallow soda lake so alkaline its waters bloom red and orange — the most otherworldly landscape on the Northern Circuit. That hostile chemistry is exactly why it matters: with no predators able to cross the caustic flats, around three-quarters of the world’s lesser flamingos breed here.
Natron rewards the adventurous traveller. Days are spent walking the Engare Sero river gorge to its hidden waterfalls, visiting traditional Maasai homesteads, and taking in the vast Rift Valley scenery — with the option, for the very fit, of an overnight climb up Lengai itself.
A scenic 5–6 hour drive from Arusha to Engare Sero.
Wade and scramble up the river gorge to hidden falls.
Walk the lakeshore with a Maasai guide (flamingos in season).
Meet a community living much as it has for generations.
Natron is for travellers who want raw and remote over comfort — the roads are rough, the heat serious, and accommodation simple. Go for the landscape and flamingos, not big game. It connects scenically to the northern Serengeti via Klein's Gate, making a rewarding loop rather than a there-and-back.

These are the destinations we most often pair with Lake Natron Adventure, based on route flow, season, and how the wider itinerary fits together.
