Extraordinary African Safaris
Summit the 'Mountain of God' — an overnight climb of East Africa's only active volcano to a crater-rim sunrise over the Rift Valley.
Ol Doinyo Lengai (2,962 m), the Maasai ‘Mountain of God’ near Lake Natron, is East Africa’s only active volcano — and it erupts a rare, cool carbonatite lava found nowhere else on Earth. Climbing it is one of Tanzania’s most demanding and singular adventures.
The ascent starts around midnight to beat the heat and reach the summit for sunrise. It’s relentlessly steep — roughly 1,600 m of climbing on loose volcanic slopes — but the reward is the crater rim at dawn, looking into a steaming volcanic landscape and out across the Rift Valley to Lake Natron far below.
Begin in the cool of night from the base.
About 1,600 m up loose volcanic slopes — slow and steady.
Reach the summit for sunrise over a steaming crater.
Carefully back down before the heat builds.
Genuinely tough — among the steepest climbs in the region, on unstable ground, overnight. You need solid fitness and a head for steep terrain; it's not a casual hike. For fit, adventurous climbers it's unforgettable. It pairs naturally with a Lake Natron stay (where the trek begins).

These are the destinations we most often pair with Ol Doinyo Lengai Trek, based on route flow, season, and how the wider itinerary fits together.
