Ol Doinyo Lengai (2,962 m), the Maasai ‘Mountain of God’ near Lake Natron, is East Africa’s only active volcano — and it erupts a rare, cool carbonatite lava found nowhere else on Earth. Climbing it is one of Tanzania’s most demanding and singular adventures.
The ascent starts around midnight to beat the heat and reach the summit for sunrise. It’s relentlessly steep — roughly 1,600 m of climbing on loose volcanic slopes — but the reward is the crater rim at dawn, looking into a steaming volcanic landscape and out across the Rift Valley to Lake Natron far below.
