Extraordinary African Safaris
Climb Mount Rungwe (2,961 m), a forested dormant volcano in the southern highlands — montane forest, rare primates, and crater views.
Mount Rungwe, a 2,961-metre dormant volcano near Tukuyu in the lush southern highlands, is one of the region’s great hidden treks. Its slopes are cloaked in dense montane forest — home to the rare kipunji monkey, discovered only in 2003 and found almost nowhere else — rising to moorland and a crater near the summit.
The climb is steep and the forest often misty, giving an atmospheric, wild feel. Combined with the area’s tea estates, crater lakes, and waterfalls, it makes a rewarding objective for hikers exploring Tanzania’s green, little-visited south.
Climb through dense, misty montane forest.
Overnight on the mountain's upper slopes.
Reach the summit area and crater near the top.
Return through forest, with tea estates and lakes nearby.
A rewarding, atmospheric climb for hikers exploring the southern highlands — the forest and the rare kipunji are special, though the misty weather that makes it lush can also obscure views. It's remote and steep; come for the wild forest experience and the region, not guaranteed summit panoramas.
