Self-Drive Safari

For the independent traveller — a fully equipped 4x4 and a planned route to explore Tanzania's parks at your own wheel, with our backup behind you.

Experience Guide

A self-drive safari hands you the keys. You travel in a fully equipped 4×4 — roof tent or lodge-based, GPS, recovery gear, fridge — following a route we’ve planned, stopping where and when you please. It’s the choice of independent travellers who relish the freedom and don’t mind navigating Tanzania’s roads and park systems themselves.

We make it workable: a sensible route, pre-booked accommodation or campsites, park-fee guidance, and 24/7 phone support if anything goes wrong. Many guests take a guide for the in-park days (where local knowledge dramatically improves sightings and navigation) and drive the transfers themselves — the best of both.

Support
Always on call

Our team is a phone call away throughout the trip.

Is It Worth It?

Self-drive suits confident, experienced overland travellers — Tanzania's roads, navigation, and park bureaucracy aren't for the nervous. Honestly, for in-park days a local guide finds far more wildlife and handles the rules, so many self-drivers hire one just for the parks. If you want total independence and adventure, though, it's hugely rewarding.

Good to Know

  • Best for experienced overland drivers
  • Roads and navigation can be challenging
  • Consider a guide for in-park days
  • Dry season makes driving much easier

Before You Book

Is self-drive safari realistic in Tanzania?
+
Yes, for confident, experienced drivers. Roads and park systems take effort, so we provide a planned route, bookings, and 24/7 support to make it manageable.
Should I still take a guide?
+
For the in-park days, it's worth it — a guide finds far more wildlife and handles park rules. Many guests self-drive the transfers and add a guide just for the parks.
What vehicle do I get?
+
A fully equipped 4x4 with recovery gear, GPS, and a fridge, configured for roof-tent or lodge-based travel depending on your plan.
When is best for self-drive?
+
The dry season (June to October), when roads are firmer and navigation is easier; the rains make some tracks difficult or impassable.
