Sundowner Experience

The great safari ritual — a cold drink in hand as the African sun sinks over the plains, the sky on fire and the day's animals settling in.

Experience Guide

The sundowner is the oldest ritual in safari, and still the best. As the light turns gold and then red, your guide pulls up at a viewpoint — a kopje, a ridge, the open plain — and sets out drinks and snacks on the bonnet or a small table. You stand with a cold gin and tonic or a soft drink and simply watch the sun go down over Africa.

It’s a moment to pause and let the day settle: the heat easing, the birds going quiet, the first stars appearing, and the knowledge that you’re standing somewhere truly wild. Whether after a long game drive or as an outing in itself, it’s the punctuation mark a safari day deserves.

Is It Worth It?

Often included with conservancy stays, and well worth requesting if it isn't — it costs little and delivers one of safari's defining moments. Only possible where vehicles can be out at dusk (conservancies and certain viewpoints), since the parks close at sunset. A small thing that everyone remembers.
