Marangu Route Trek

Kilimanjaro's only hut-to-hut route — sleep in dormitory huts rather than tents on the classic, gentlest-graded path to Uhuru Peak.

Experience Guide

Marangu is the oldest and best-known way up Kilimanjaro, and the only route with permanent sleeping huts rather than tents — which makes it popular in the wet season and with those who prefer a bunk to canvas. It approaches from the southeast and descends the same way, the only route to do so.

Often called the ‘Coca-Cola route’, it has the gentlest gradients but, crucially, the shortest standard itinerary — and that’s the catch. The classic 5-day version gives poor acclimatisation and a lower success rate; we strongly recommend the 6-day option with an extra acclimatisation day at Horombo.

How It Unfolds

Day 1
Marangu Gate → Mandara Hut

Through rainforest to the first huts (2,720 m).

Day 2
→ Horombo Hut

Moorland to Horombo (3,720 m); add a day here to acclimatise.

Day 3
→ Kibo Hut

Across the saddle to Kibo (4,700 m) at the base of the cone.

Day 4
Summit & descend

Midnight start to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), then down to Horombo.

Is It Worth It?

Marangu's huts are a real plus in the rains and for tent-averse climbers, but don't be tempted by the 5-day version — its acclimatisation is the worst on the mountain and success rates suffer. Always add the extra Horombo day. For scenery and success, Machame or Lemosho beat it.

Good to Know

  • Choose 6 days, not 5, for the extra acclimatisation
  • Huts mean no tents — good in the rains
  • Lower success on the 5-day version
  • Up and down the same path (less scenic variety)

Before You Book

Why is Marangu called the Coca-Cola route?
+
For its huts and historic popularity — it was the original tourist route, with sodas once sold at the huts.
Is Marangu easier than other routes?
+
Gentler gradients, yes, but the short 5-day itinerary gives poor acclimatisation and a lower success rate. We recommend 6 days.
Do I sleep in tents?
+
No — Marangu is the only Kilimanjaro route with permanent dormitory huts, a plus in wet weather.
How many days should I take?
+
Six, with an acclimatisation day at Horombo, rather than the riskier 5-day version.
