Extraordinary African Safaris
Kilimanjaro's only hut-to-hut route — sleep in dormitory huts rather than tents on the classic, gentlest-graded path to Uhuru Peak.
Marangu is the oldest and best-known way up Kilimanjaro, and the only route with permanent sleeping huts rather than tents — which makes it popular in the wet season and with those who prefer a bunk to canvas. It approaches from the southeast and descends the same way, the only route to do so.
Often called the ‘Coca-Cola route’, it has the gentlest gradients but, crucially, the shortest standard itinerary — and that’s the catch. The classic 5-day version gives poor acclimatisation and a lower success rate; we strongly recommend the 6-day option with an extra acclimatisation day at Horombo.
Through rainforest to the first huts (2,720 m).
Moorland to Horombo (3,720 m); add a day here to acclimatise.
Across the saddle to Kibo (4,700 m) at the base of the cone.
Midnight start to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), then down to Horombo.
Marangu's huts are a real plus in the rains and for tent-averse climbers, but don't be tempted by the 5-day version — its acclimatisation is the worst on the mountain and success rates suffer. Always add the extra Horombo day. For scenery and success, Machame or Lemosho beat it.

These are the destinations we most often pair with Marangu Route Trek, based on route flow, season, and how the wider itinerary fits together.
